On Circumcision's Evening

On Circumcision's evening

The night's orbs bleed

On the compass line

With violence against

Their impetus to fall into one,

The dread inevitable recall

Written before all time.

The air suffused with a force

Gnawing at my bowels

 - At our cycle's close -

With my eyes upturned to see

The foreshadow of the final meridian.

There I saw the foreskin of Christ

Burning a hole in the sky,

Around which thousands of angel hosts

Hymn and circumambulate.

Easter 2022

O holy languid Dawn,

What ancient rest have you discovered?

What great sleep have you disturbed?

Hidden away in the bowels of the earth?

What light withers and returns

To vanish before the noontime?

To awaken the reeds and shatter the dew?

Greeted by birdsong and the weeping of women?

Now the cattails swing their heavy heads

Like drunken girls in a bathroom mirror,

While knots of snakes writhe between the grasses

Like half-conscious children on the floor of a kitchen.

And the raveled limbs of trees release their dormant cry

And cast off the muzzle of their frigid burden.

A spotted fawn glowing stands alert

To anticipate the arrival

Muted as an echo from distant time:

The world to come calling as a whisper

Of half heard forgotten language

From a mysterious dark and foreign tongue;

An image upon an image,

A promise clambered for in the half-light

Spreading leisurely across the canvas

To at last take its seat and be revealed in us.

A Spirit of Nowhere

Towering rows of beige siding melts

In the haze of a plastic twilight

To recede past sight and blend with the horizon,

While miles of painted on concrete drips

Into a forever dilating

Maze of streets and thoroughfares

So vast they eclipse the sight and knowledge

Of human affairs or planning committees.

And here is the boy who clamours and shakes

To disembodied voices in the night,

Pacing endlessly through the confines of

An imperceptible part of nowhere.

Trinity Sunday 2021

O never-failing and radiant dawn,

Dweller of the heavens, the eternal east,

Triune Deity alone and unseen

Seated in a shroud of limitless light.

Now behold this throne in the heart of man

Who is but dust and air, a nothingness

When compared to He who is within him,

Closer than the breath and hot flowing veins.

And inwardly the sacred change affects,

As when eyes are opened and dissolve to flame,

Flying like a moth to the eternal glance,

And man is transformed by the vision gained.

There’s a peace in the touch of cold air

There’s a peace in the touch of cold air,

And boughs that brush upon the frozen glass,

Through it I stare into the naked wood,

And draw life from the breath of its long rest.

Nature now walks through this long dark passage

And all must yield to a silent repose

Under a grey sky and the falling snow,

To long last rise like the dawn of the morn.

A Summer's Twilight

The air hangs heavy on a summer’s twilight,
When all is wrapped in a blanket of heat;
When light falls down in a chorus of colour
And lustrous beams give way to long shadows.

For these briefs hours the cover is lifted,
And the earth exhales a sigh of relief;
The sweet taste of a cool breeze to savour,
A refreshment for limbs now released.

Do you hear what this night is singing?
What the soft sound of leaves is inviting?
The echo of a lonesome voice is calling
Away, away into the release of the night.

Clutched in a passive discontentment,
Anxious and burning to be free
Out where beauty and fear are one:
Familiar streets now clothed in mystery.

To disappear into the fading dusk:
The birth of many a youthful dream:
Wild eyes and a flash of flesh laid bare,
The suspense of obscure possibility.

And at every falling of the sun,
Here I stand alone and watching
The world become transfigured in sense
And flower with inscrutability.

On the untamed plains of the world

On the untamed plains of the world
There are creatures more keen and vital
Than we can conjure in verse or in dreams;
And among them dwells the bull that is Lord.
And his voice harrows the earth,
And men try to stop that dreadful sound:
From the South Sea to the wide open North,
But forever the fearsome billowing resounds.

How deep the blacks and dark the nights?
To know there are always shadows behind?
What is the depth that would confound
And silence your boundless discerning?

You fashion your words as a harness
And imagine your theories strong,
As a bridle and bit to fasten
Comely jaws which foam and quake,
Flowing with life and fecundity.
But what can wake you from your fantasy?
Can any man bear to know?
That nothing in earth or heaven can stop Him
From begetting strange and terrible children?

Like the cool breeze of morning

Like the cool breeze of morning
Calmly winding through the window pane;
As a shower of rain gallantly falling,
Restoring the earth to life again;
Your bright eyes shine glistening
And whisper sweet words of returning.

Long have you within my inmost-self sung,
Sustained amidst the sublime and banal
Forever when I’m old, and while I was young
Hearing again and again that long-awaited call.
So shine down across this desolate sprawl
And break through the veil of impenetrable nightfall.

A Prairie Poem

A sky that unfurls past the horizon,
As a waving flag in the light of sun.
A canvas without any border
And curls forever into the distance.

A land with a single dimension:
Which no eye can encompass,
Whose immensity devours,
And whose language is sublime.

And the Rockies stand in silence watching
The vain pursuits of mortal men.
The Guardians of the West, and dawn of my dreams,
Soon I’ll know where these distant roads lead.

A Poem

The world is held in a single glance
Where a thousand moments slip into one,
Where a second is an endless trance
And the memory shines as clear as the sun.

What was merely modest and mundane
Has again claimed its native mystery:
A face mingled with love and with pain,
Which revels in its obscurity.

She’s almost as she was long ago,
But no joyous meeting, a cruel reprise.
And in the glow of streetlights through the snow,
The vacuous space of cold, vacant eyes.
